Leaving a Legacy

Believe it or not, being a good, involved, plugged in Dad can be isolating sometimes.  At least I found that it was in my experience.  I spent a lot of time without having other Dads in my life that I could candidly share what was going on with me and my family without worry of judgement or having the subject changed.

I also never really understood the point of having “online friends” or being part of an “online community” because I didn’t see how it could fill any type of void in the “real world.”

That all changed when I found a Dad Bloggers group on Facebook.

I could go on and on about how their advice has not only enriched my writing but how their comradery and willingness to listen has made my “real life” so much better.

But, this post isn’t about me.

It is about Oren Miller.

orenfinal

Oren is the founder of that facebook group and he needs us.  Oren was diagnosed with Cancer.  It is stage four.  His time with us is in danger of being cut short.  He is fighter, he is strong, he is not taking this laying down.  If you are in doubt of that, please read his words from his site A Blogger And A Father.

I cannot imagine what it is like to be in my friend’s shoes.  Yes I call him my friend even though I have never met him face to face. He is a TRUE FRIEND.

I do know, though, that he and his family deserve all the peace they can get during this time.  I know they say money cannot buy happiness, and that is true.  But Oren is happy.  His family is happy.  Sure they are scared and worried, but what we can help them with is some financial peace of mind.

The Pappy has NEVER asked you to open your wallet for anything.  Until now.

I am asking you to click on the picture and donate to Oren and his family.

Don’t feel like what you can give is too little.  We are in the midst of a financial crisis in my family, but we still gave something. Because Dads stick together.

People are afraid of the stigma of asking for help these days, especially financial help.  They don’t want people to mistrust their intentions or inconvenience themselves.  There are certain causes, though, that say “Forget that! The possibility that one person will see the story of this person I care about and help them out is worth any other judgement I may get!”

Thank you for taking the time to read about my Buddy, Oren.  Take a moment to pray for him and his family as well!

Tony Thompson: Today’s Oral-B / Life of Dad #PowerofDad Pappy of the Day

People overuse the saying “saved the best for last” and I would never say one father is better than another, but there are certain Dads who have walked through a hotter fire than others.

Tony has certainly walked through the furnace and done so with a kid in each arm, one on his back, one on his shoulders, and other holding each hand!

Tpodfinal

In the words of his wife, Jenny:

Tony Thompson is a wonderful father of 5. He and I have fostered over 21 children, adopted 3 from foster care, and had 2 biological children. He has a 3 yr old son with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, and a 1 year old with Brain Cancer. He is an extraordinary dad that gives everything he has to God and his family.

Can we take a moment to read again that they have fostered TWENTY ONE CHILDREN! That is a dad of dads!

As Jenny also said, their one year old has Brain Cancer.  Take a moment and look at their page Prayers for Gideon.

Tony is so great, other people wanted to chime in to.

From Gail Sapp:

Anthony Thompson is an amazing father. I saw this just shortly after I met him. I’ve known him now for 5 years and watching him with his children, seeing the patience and love that he displays is a beautiful thing. These qualities he displays with all children, those he fostered, and the kids he serves at church. But what he has displayed in these last two months shows his faith in God is unwavering and stronger than ever! While his youngest is battling health issues, and Jenny needs to be with him, Tony holds his family together, caring for his two girls and oldest son (who has special needs!) while working. Through all of this Tony makes sure his children are at church every Sunday. He has no doubts about God’s love for him and his family and his children are strong in their faith because of it! I am proud to call him my friend and brother in christ!

From Connie Aaron:

It’s difficult to describe Tony in just a few words. Tony is the anchor for his family- he keeps things held down no matter what storm is on the horizon. He’s calm in the midst of chaos when it comes to child-rearing. Kids could be screaming and running through his house during group, and he calmly gets their attention to get them to settle down. Kids have his respect and so do parents. He’s an amazing father.

Thank you, Tony, for holding tight to your family!  You truly deserve to be PAPPY OF THE DAY!!

We all need a little Dad Time…

Happy Father’s Day Pappies.  I hope everyone is having a great day.

Things have been crazy in my house with two sick kids.  My “Day” was spent cleaning up puke, but hey, I got a lot of cuddles also so I’m really not complaining.  It is all about taking the good with the bad.  And speaking of the good…

One of my Father’s Day gifts that I have already been neck deep in was a book from Max Lucado.  I have been a big fan of his writing since I was in High School so when I saw his new book “Dad Time” I was super pumped.

Basically it takes snipets from his writings that are all about Fatherhood and puts them all in one place.  I am an avid reader, but there are times when I need a little quick inspiration to move forward through the day and this is going to be my new go to book.

dadtime

Another thing Lucado deserves credit for is acknowledging Adoptive parents.  I am adopted and plan to adopt kids and I was really moved by the following quote which is found on page 121 and is reprinted from the book The Great House of God:

Adoptive parents understand God’s passion to adopt us. They know what it means to feel and empty space inside.  They know what it means to hunt, to set out on a mission, and to take responsibility for a child with a spotted past and a dubious future.  If anybody understands God’s ardor for his children, it’s someone who has rescued an orphan from despair, for that is what God has done for us.

Typing that out I am almost moved to tears, as I was when I first read it.

I am lucky enough that Thomas Nelson Publishing has given me an additional 3 copies of this book to give away!  So click the link below to enter.

But if you can’t wait for the contest to be over, and I can’t blame you, click on the cover of the book above to order it!

Philip Shaffer: Today’s Oral-B / Life of Dad #PowerofDad Pappy of the Day

As our Pappy of the Day series winds down (we have two more) I would be remiss not to honor Philip Shaffer.

Philip is a great Dad to his son Liam, which you can tell by how his son looks at him!  Liam is about to be a year old, so soon Philip won’t be a “new dad” anymore, but to look at him you would think he was an old pro!

philPODfinal

Here is what his wife, Ashley, said about him:

Philip is definitely one of a kind (In a good way) I’m truly blessed to have such a wonderful man to call my husband and father to our son. He is full of energy. He’s caring and compassionate, and a very hard worker. Words can’t even describe how great of a father Philip is. Always ready to lend a helping hand, whether its feeding time, bath time, or Liam needs a diaper. I couldn’t imagine a better role model for our little boy! Its my prayer that Liam becomes an amazing God fearing man. Just like his daddy!!

Dante Bucci: Today’s Oral-B / Life of Dad #PowerofDad Pappy of the Day

I have no problem admitting that I have known some of the Pappys of the Day, and honestly the ones I have known have been very special to me.  There is something so amazing about knowing a guy before he was a Dad and seeing them transform from an average guy in to Super Dad.

I knew Dante’s wife, Ellie, before I knew him.  She and I answered phones in windowless room at a University helping people with their Financial Aid. Yes, that job was about as exciting as it sounds haha, but I met some great people there.  She helped train me one day and from the moment we met it was pretty clear we would be friends.  In fact, I was very excited for her to meet my wife because I knew they would get along so well.

As I became closer with Ellie over time and learned about some of the major health obstacles she was facing, her overwhelming joy for life became even more amazing for me.

When she began dating Dante I was guarded just in case he hurt her heart and I needed to beat him up.  Thankfully, though, he protected her heart and made her a happily married woman.

dbPODfinal

Now they have a beautiful daughter.  The health struggles are still there, but you would never know it to talk to them.  The Buccis are wonderfully solid and Godly people.

Now, this isn’t a Mother’s Day post, so I guess I better let Ellie talk about Dante some!  Here is what she has to say:

As a girl I often dreamed about the man of my dreams and all the baby boys we would have… Yes I said baby boys .. I always saw myself raising boys and then after marrying my husband my desire for little mini Dante’s was even stronger. My husband is an incredible man and in my heart I thought.. There is no better man to raise strong, God fearing leaders. In my mind we needed more Dante’s in the world.. So who better to populate the world with these incredible little boys than the one and only Dante Bucci and I … Well almost exactly one year ago we found out we were pregnant with our first baby!!! Immediately my eyes saw blue..

Well 25 weeks into our pregnancy we went in for the oh so exciting gender reveal ultrasound… To my shock and awe there wasn’t a boy in my belly… Nope there was a precious little lady! Oh my STARS!!!! A GIRL!! I couldn’t believe it.. It wasn’t that I didn’t want a girl it was just that I truly believed that God was calling us to raise boys!

Then I got to thinking and my pregnancy hormones went into over drive.. And oh the tears that started to flow… Gods plans are so much better than ours and His faithfulness is far greater than anything we could have ever imagine! God gave us a precious girl who will be able to experience the most selfless, kind and tender hearted love. Christ shines through my husband.. People see Jesus through the way he cares for Bella and I.

She is being raised by a man who leads by example. His tender hearted spirit and sacrificial love is unlike anything I have ever experienced before. On the drive home from the ultrasound I looked at my husband and I said.. “Well at least we don’t have to worry about her dating.. Because there will never be a man as incredible as her Dad”…

He is more than I deserve and then some… And I couldn’t dream of a better Dad to raise our precious Arrabella… This picture was taken 8 days after she was born.. By the incredible Mykah photography… There will never be another picture that better symbolizes the faithfulness of Lord in my life! Gods faithfulness in a husband who shows Christ’s love to me daily and the answered prayer we have in our precious baby girl! Dante is an amazing father all while he take care for me and all my medical craziness, works full time, teaches part-time, and purses his doctorate degree! Whoever said men couldn’t multitask couldn’t have been more wrong about my husband!

Bella and I love you so much Dante and I couldn’t dream of doing this life with a more incredible husband and father! Happy 1st father day my love!

Lamantions 3:22-23:

The LORD’S loving kindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

Richard Wood: Today’s Oral-B / Life of Dad #PowerofDad Pappy of the Day

We are on the home stretch of our Pappys of the Day, and I have to say how awesome it has been to give these Dads the attention they deserve.

Yesterday was actually the biggest day of traffic this site has ever seen, so I know I am not the only one who has Dads on their minds this Father’s Day.

RWPODfinal

Today we are featuring Richard Wood.  His wife, Kimmie, wrote in to tell us all about him:

We want to nominate Richard Wood because he goes over and beyond for his kids. After working a long day that often starts at 6am, you’ll find him giving the boys a bath. He works hard and always gives it an extra 150%. The greatest thing is how much he wants to instill the Love of Christ through his boys. From teaching Jude different praise and worship songs at nightime to praying at every meal with them, the boys are going to have an amazing Godly man to look up to. If Jude and Silas’ favorite worship song, Jesus what a friend, comes on he will stop what hes doing and will dance along with them! They see him serving at church on the weekends and in his small group and know that their daddy just wants to be the hands and feet of Christ.

Patrick Rose: Today’s Oral-B / Life of Dad #PowerofDad Pappy of the Day

Bearded Dad.

Biker Dad.

Tattooed Dad.

Young Dad.

Single Dad.

Many people would stigmatize all the Dads listed above.  (That list could have been miles long.) Moms at the playground have been know to move their kids away from Dads like that. Don’t get offended if you aren’t like that, Mommy.  Just trust me…it happens.

Recently I was told by a bearded Dad that he was at a water park and actually had the police called, saying that a suspicious man was with a young child.  He had to deal with the humiliation of being taken aside by the cops and asked why he was there with HIS CHILD!

I’m sure our Pappy of the Day has had to deal with some looks.  But, according to his fiancee Melissa who submitted him for Pappy of the Day, he has excelled in the realm of Fatherhood.

PRpodfinal

So we salute him today! Here are Melissa’s words:

Pat’s been a single father (with the aid of a small, mighty, village) since our Kylie was about 7 months old. I won’t go into details, but tough times like he unfortunately encountered could significantly wreck and alter a person’s outlook on the future. He could have used the “victim” crutch. Could have had pity party after pity party. However, while he was avidly working to heal and carry on, he never once thought that Kylie taking the back burner was an option. He stepped up as a young, new father when most wouldn’t have been able to do the same as effectively as he has. He took care of himself and took care of Kylie. He moved on in love for Kylie. He now works 10 hour days Monday – Thursdays so that he can have his weekends and Fridays to spend with Kylie; while providing a better life for her and I. Never have I met a child that’s all encompassing naturally smart, funny, outgoing, and life loving. Pat’s love and hopes for Kylie shine bright through her growing personality. He is so proud of her. He revels in her hilarity. He is totally protective over her. Even to a stranger, he undoubtedly cherishes the five years worth of bouncing joy he’s been blessed with. I could go on and on about how awe inspiring the dynamics of their relationship is, but it would all sum up into two words – real love. This upcoming Father’s Day I just want to reiterate how proud I am of the father that my fiance is, and the man that he’s blossomed into through his positive outlook on fatherhood. Some homes are called broken, ours is beautifully blended.

Nags Head July Jerry, Michael

As you can tell from this picture my Dad is freaking cool. Although there is a lot less hair on his head, I still feel like my Dad could wear this shirt.  There must be something about looking up to your Dad that means no matter how old you are you still want him to show you how to do things.  Recently we were putting up a chicken coop in the back of my property and even though I probably could have figured out how to build it all myself, it just seemed natural to follow his lead and let him show me what to do.

August 2000, Sitka, Alaska, Michael, his fish 15lb.34in., Jerry & Nancy's fish(borrowed)

My Dad has always made it a priority to make memories with me.  Lots of camping trips, constant fishing in the summer, building blocks, telling stories, he did it all.  He also did it while working at a stressful banking job with loan customers who required constant attention.

The picture of my Dad and I fishing in Alaska is one of my favorite pictures ever taken.  That day I felt like the manliest of men.

My Dad always did his best to make us smile.  This Father’s Day I am lucky enough to be partnering with Oral-B, a company as well respected as my Father is.

Not only is Oral-B partnering with the March of Dimes, they are also joining forces with members of “Football’s First Family,” New York Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning, his father Archie and his daughter Ava – to celebrate fatherhood’s little moments.

And because Dad always deserves the best, I am excited that I can offer you a coupon to give the Dad in your life a gift that he will be able to use year round: $7.oo off of the Oral-B Black.
